SomaVeda® Ayurveda Health Coaching Counseling

By Ajahn, Dr. Anthony B. James, Dean of the SomaVeda College of Natural Medicine and College of Ayurveda Medicine

Ayurveda teaching from ajahn Dr. Anthony B. James

UPDATED March 3, 2021

Hi everyone and good day! Yes, almost everyone (those paying attention) is concerned with the Covid-19 pandemic now consuming the air waves of every news channel! And rightly so!  How is this all going to pan out? For most it is a bit uncertain in the short term. For the long, well, it’s going to work out! How do I know this? It always has and always does! This is not the first pandemic of epic proportions and risk to all nor will it be the last.

When we look at the functional, indigenous traditional medicine histories of the past we know that Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Native American Medicine as well as Homeopathy and Nature Cure (i.e. Traditional Naturopathy), especially as found in the Christian Monastic Medicine traditions of the Hospitaller’s (Founder of the Modern “Hospital” concept and “Nursing” weathered in some cases MANY pandemics.

The knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of surviving epidemics has not changed, not been lost just because the “times” have changed. Yes, we do have modern medicine and “medical respirators”, although we have a shortage of individuals who know how to operate these high tech life saving devices.

Disclaimer: This is a theoretical article and opinion about how far can Ayurveda (Ayurveda of Thailand and Thai Yoga i.e. Traditional Thai Massage) be useful in preventing, reducing and/ or treating the symptoms, pre and or co-morbities of “SARS-2  Covid-19”. We are not claiming to prevent or to cure it. Do not follow any advice given in the article (or any part of our website) without consulting your doctor. We have not cured any patients of Corona virus with the treatments discussed below, neither do we claim that these treatment ideas cure it or prevent. Consider it as a mere conceptual article and our learned opinion. However, we have reports of many people no longer suffering, sick or dying who are following these protocols!

SomaVeda® Thai Yoga and Ayurveda Solutions for Corona Issues

Please note the following recommendations are in addition to the really good overall advise and NAIC Monastic Medical Recommendation’s guidelines as well as legal edicts as per governmental authorities. All health and medical recommendation’s on an individual level must follow your personal physicians recommendations.

So… best bet for most people is to:

A) Reduce your exposure! From a scientifically validated point of view, the single most valuable methodology to prevent the contact and spread of contagious disease is to simply keep your hands clean! Wash your hands regularly with ordinary soap and warm water for 20 to 30 seconds. Experts and scientist agree that mask of any kind in the general population do not have any benefit is reducing the spread of a pathogenic virus. A typical mask has open pores between 5 and 10 microns at best. Cloth mask or face coverings might have opening over 100 microns. A typical virus particle is as small as 2 microns. Using a mask to prevent exposure to a virus is like trying to stop moskitoes with a chain link fence!

Close social interaction is required for health and well being as well as resistance to illness and disease. All illnesses and diseases. . Our entire lives are built on and based on socialization and social interaction… It is simply not possible for the greater population to sequester and isolate. Income level, access to deliveries… especially a condition for rural and or remote areas! No “Grub Hub” or “Uber Eats” in these areas. Maybe your a “Prepper” maybe not. But all of us need to be somewhat on the “prepper” train right now  and for some unforeseeable future. No matter what your up to reduce your social activities to those activities which support health and self sufficiency as best you can. Many “essential” infrastructure persons from health providers to first responder’s will have the same issues as most of us while being required to get out there in high risk environments… no choice. My advise to these persons is do what you can aside from your job responsibilities to take care of your self and your family! You now have multiple jobs in that you have a public responsibility and still need to take care of your own households.

  1. Avoid isolation: Now that we know that social distancing has little or no measurable effect on the spread of the “Cervesa Bug”. We have to consider that our health can suffer if we isolate ourselves completely. Social isolation, Social Distancing disrupts the functioning of the vagus nerve—the brain-gut connection that regulates our immune system and our response to stress. Try to maintain a sense of social connectedness by engaging in small and safe social gatherings, eating meals with your family or a few friends, and avoiding over-reliance on electronic socialization. Above all, stay calm and open hearted while observing these commonsense precautions which might be prudent for any “Flu or Flu type -Bug”:

    • Avoid close contact with elderly people who are sick (High Risk for Pre and or co-morbidities). (i.e. 83yr+, Medically Obese, Severe Diabetes, Severe Heart Disease, Cancer in Hospice or Nursing Home!)

    • Wash your hands frequently.

    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

    • Stay home when you are sick.

    • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue; then throw the tissue in the trash.

    • Keep bundled up and warm during cold weather.

B) Be healthy… If your not? Ask yourself “Why am I not healthy?” if the answer is anything that has been in your power and means to correct… get on it! Every health expert including myself will tell you that your baseline of health and wellness will be a contributing factor in both your personal susceptibility and if and when exposed (and you will be), you experience as virulence, degree of illness and risk of death. We here at the SomaVeda College of Natural Medicine and Thai Yoga Center have been teaching all of these concepts for years! Those of you who are graduates from our programs and especially my classes have heard me tirelessly and repetitively tell to to get your personal health in order.

Do the medicine you have been taught. Use the resources you have been given to get healthy i.e. “Physician, Heal Thy Self” as both a pre-condition and as a formal condition towards healing others. Those of you who have followed the teachings are now in excellent shape to deal with the current crises… those of you who followed lackadaisically or didn’t think it was important enough to double down and master the ancient and modern medicine teaching given are now in the same boat as everyone else, those who did not have education, those who don’t have a clue!

C) Practice Yoga with others! For thousands of years Yoga practice has been the core, the foundation of individual and personal health. That has not changed! Certainly there are many Yoga Teachers and Yoga schools right now that would be happy to see you supporting your health by showing up to live classes. There is no substitute for live classes with a live teacher. Everyone needs those “hands on” corrections and no way to get them on ZOOM! Also, consider MA or Martial Arts. All MA have healing benefits. Of course I am prejudiced and prefer Thai (Krabi-Krabong, Muay Thai, Muay Boran), Filipino (Kali, Arnis, Pekiti Tersia) as well as Chinese styles such as Wing Chun Gung Fu, Tai Chi and or Jeet Kune Do (Lee Jun Fan- Bruce Lee Fighting Method)… however any MA with a vigorous practice that gets the heart going, is engaging and or strengthening or toning is perfect.  Find a brave teacher near you and bravely go check them out.

You may not like this! I want to say that those graduates  and or former students who exclusively have chosen to re-define our SomaVeda Indigenous Traditional Medicine® Thai Yoga as exclusively “Bodywork” and or “Massage” are just now wishing you had paid more attention to the parts of the program dealing with immune system, nutrition, supplementation, detoxification and counseling… You know who you are! However, all is forgiven. Break out your notebooks, text and course materials and dig deep into your notes for solutions you can do right now and which you can use as a basis for counseling! Now is the time to build and redirect into the counseling services your qualified and authorized to do which do not require physical contact and or even being in the same room! You can counsel by phone appointment, “Skype”, FB Live, “Insta” Live, Twitter or whatever format works best for your communications with your clients.

For example, it is proven clinically and scientifically that improving your emotional/ mental health has an immediate and direct impact of your immune system function and overall health and well being. We have an amazing technology called B.E.T./ EFT and or “Energy Psychology” which EVERY SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Certified Practitioner at EVERY practice level is required to learn and know! Now is the time to put that training and secondary certification/ scope of practice to use. Who does not need professional counseling on their negative and old unresolved negative emotional issues, fears, phobia, anxiety issues right now? Those therapist who are paying attention are scheduling paid professional consultation by phone and on-line. If your not… ask your self “Why not?”

A big part of what it means to be able to help bring healing to others is to “Work on Your Self”. Use the “Tapping” to build your own stability and remove confusion and irrational fear to better enable your own clarity to make better decisions during difficult times. Yes physical distance can be helpful… however, do not isolate yourself from your own healing practices and certainly do not be one of those “Healers” who in a crises disappears or is other wise “Not Available”. If your a trained healer, minister or Practitioner Therapist now is the time to prove your metal. Put up or shut up. Help or admit defeat to your lack of discipline and either immediately start supporting those who can do the work or get out of the way. If these words seem strong or critical, then so be it. This current time and pandemic is EXACTLY what we have been training for. This is why true healers, practicing authentic, genuine medicine have been training for. I hope with all my heart that you, my current and former students choose to step up and not out!

I want to recommend for the “Self Work” part of the equation right now my book “Angels Speak, The Art and Work of Crafting Consciousness“. Take some of the “Free Time” you now have because you may not be able to “rub on people” for money and continue to educate yourself on how to work on yourself in such a way as to reconnect to being able to contribute in difficult times.

IMPORTANT ALERT: If you are, and or define your professional livelihood as a “Massage” person (legal definition as someone who rubs on the public for money… Not my definition this is how Massage profession is defined by state laws!) my heart goes out to you as the massage industry is experiencing a huge crash which is likely to continue for the future. Non-medical, non-essential touching for esthetics, relaxation and or “therapy” may even be banned by the government in the near future.

I have a solution for you… Learn SomaVeda® Thai Yoga, Ayurveda and Indigenous Traditional Natural Medicine. Yes we are the masters of Thai Traditional Physical Therapy (Thai Yoga Massage) however, in our traditional based system we teach “ALL” of the Ayurveda, Yoga Therapy and Indigenous Protocols which do NOT Require touching at all! If all you know or can do is rub of people then now is the time to re-direct!

Have confidence! SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Therapeutic Day Protocol works! It directly and immediately builds and improves all immune system quanta and measurable factors including those for fighting infections and in resisting all contagious issues. Not only is this a scientific fact, supported by an ever increasing body of science and scientific investigation, research trials, but, we have a mutli-decade of anecdotal history and evidence supporting the many benefits of the work we have been given.

SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Therapy Benefits: Have a look at the article I published a couple years ago on this very topic… Why Learn SomaVeda® Thai Yoga?

Only “Isolate” if you are sick or suspect your sick!

Health officials recommend relying on good judgment and “social distancing” to keep ourselves safe. Yet, even as we are forced, sometimes without our consent, limit our social interactions, it’s important to remember that we are all in this together. Socially together is required for all societies to function! This realization is essential to our well-being. Throughout the long history of humankind (and of the animal kingdom, too) those who learned to collaborate and intelligently adapt have prevailed.

Ayurveda provides us with a host of ways to ramp up our immune system. Here are a few tips that may not be the first you would think of! Take a look, and please reach out to me if you have any questions.

  1. Support your Agni: Digestive Fire! Our digestive system is the root of good health. Help keep it in good working order with plenty of whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat three nourishing meals a day. Breakfast should be warm and easy to digest, lunch should be your largest meal of the day, and dinner should consist of a light, warm, and easily assimilated dish, such as a soup, or lightly steamed veggies and rice. Stay away from processed foods, sugars, and heavy, oily foods. Dairy foods can also be problematic due to their mucus-forming properties.

  2. Consume a small amount of Trikatu daily before lunch: Trikatu is a Sanskrit word meaning “three spices” or “three peppers.” Trikatu is an Ayurvedic blend of equal parts of the fruits of black pepper (Piper nigrum), long pepper (Piper longum), and the rhizomes of ginger (Zingiber officinale). Its many benefits include the following:

  • Helps to clear excess kapha or mucus from the body
  • Supports healthy digestive, circulatory, and respiratory functioning
  • Helps rekindle agni (digestive fire)
  • Boosts metabolism
  • Scrapes away excess fat tissue (helpful for weight management)
  • Helps remove impurities and toxins (ama) from the body
  • Buy herbs here.
  1. Take Amalaki: Amalaki (a.k.a. amala) contains a number of health-enhancing nutrients, including vitamin C and other antioxidants. Ayurveda Herbal is now available at www.BeardedMedia.Com Buy Amalaki herbs here.

  2. Enjoy Tulsi Tea throughout your day: Tulsi, or holy basil, is a delicious form of basil that not only is a respiratory tonic, but also has antiviral qualities. It is also acts as a powerful nervine tonic that can help soothe anxiety, relieve stress, and rejuvenate the nervous system. Buy herbs here.

  3. Get Good Sleep: Sleep is of equal importance to two other key aspects of health: proper nutrition and regular exercise. This vital trio—nutrition, exercise, and sleep—form the three pillars of health. Sleep deprivation suppresses production of the infection-fighting cytokines, antibodies, and cells that are your body’s first line of defense against the virus.

No Vaccine, and with a scarcity of Masks & Hand sanitizers, Our Own Body’s Immunity is our best defense. Ayurveda has for centuries addressed the issue of how to develop and maintain immunity. Here is a few Immunity To-Dos for your family.

Wat Po, Thai Traditional Massage, Thai Yoga Center USA

The Amazing and beneficial traditional Thai massage (Thai Yoga Therapy- Thai Traditional Medicine Ayurveda) has been added to a prestigious UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE list.

Somaveda® Thai Yoga Massage Therapy Facilitated Cobra yoga posture

After bringing the Traditional Thai Healing Arts to the US in 1984 and then writing and publishing the first textbook in English on Nuad Thai, Traditional Thai Medicine Massage also in 1984, I feel this is one more vindication of just how important and significant Thai Traditional Healing arts are for the modern world.

NUAD THAI: The Thai Yoga Center’s SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Practitioner Certification program is the oldest continuous Traditional Thai Massage program in the US!

According to the BBC Post December 13th. 2019

“Nuad Thai” is now part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which features traditions and practices passed across the generations.

By being part of the list, Thai massage has been officially recognized as something to be preserved for future generations.

UNESCO is the United Nations’ agency for education, culture, and science.

The intangible cultural heritage list is separate from the world heritage list, which recognizes buildings and sites of prominence.

There are 550 items on the cultural heritage list – split into three categories – from 127 countries.

Items are added every year, with this year’s committee meeting in Bogota, Colombia.

Ayurvedic Thai Table Class

Unlike conventional massages, Thai Traditional massage is actually a spiritually based science of traditional medicine based on classical Buddhist Ayurveda. It focuses on the practical expression of loving kindness as the root of healing all diseases. As a form of traditional Yoga Therapy is incorporates sequences of You Asana or therapeutic postures to bring energy, attention, consciousness, breath and pressure to the client. Adjunct practices incorporate Diet, Vedic Nutrition, Lifestyle and teachings for emotional and mental health.

Description according to UNESCO:

“Nuad Thai, traditional Thai massage is regarded as part of the art, science and culture of traditional Thai healthcare. As a non-medicinal remedy and manual therapy, it involves bodily manipulation in which the practitioner helps rebalance the patient’s body, energy and structure to treat illnesses believed to be caused by the obstruction of energy flow along ‘sen’, lines understood to crisscross the human body. This manipulation is intended to normalize the four body elements: earth, water, wind and fire. To open up blocked routes, Nuad Thai therapists perform a combination of manipulations using their hands, elbows, knees and feet, together with herbal hot compresses to reduce inflammation. Presently, Nuad Thai is classified into two main types: Nuad Thai therapy and Nuad Thai for health promotion.”

Dive DEEPER into “What is Thai Traditional Massage”?

Therapists use not only their hands but sometimes their forearms and knees to apply pressure.

According to Unesco, the practice has its “roots in self-care in Thai peasant society of the past, [where] every village had massage healers whom villagers would turn to when they had muscle aches from working the field”. However, UNESCO in this brief summary does not address the ancient roots of Ayurveda Medicine which the “Thai Peasants” knew and practiced for millennium.

According to Unesco, the intangible culture heritage list seeks to recognize things that are “important to preserve for future generations… [like] songs sung and stories told”.

It adds that these things “form part of a heritage and this requires active effort to safeguard it”.

Drugs don’t work: Psychiatric meds for depression and other mental disorders treat symptoms, can not cure

Drugs don’t work: Psychiatric meds for depression and other mental disorders treat symptoms, can not cure

Drugs don't work: Psychiatric meds for depression and other mental disorders treat symptoms, can not cure

By Anthony B. James

Dean and Medical Director of the SomaVeda College of Natural Medicine (SCNM)

Brooksville, Florida

I ask this question in every class. Have you or anyone you know been under medical care for depression and were you or the person you know ever prescribed chemical, drugs or pharmaceuticals? Every hand in the class goes up! I then ask if anyone in the class themselves or those family members or co-workers have ever been cured of their depression by using antidepressants or drug based therapies? If so, raise your hands. No hands in the last five years, not one hand has gone up when I asked the “If they knew of anyone cured” question.

I then go on to explain that not only is this a true observation that they and their friends are not being cured, but that the whole concept that depression and or mental illness could be cured with a drug based therapy is not what they have been led to believe. That in fact it is false and everyone in the mental health industry knows it.

It is possible that antidepressants might be able to address some of the symptoms of depression but they are not designed to cure depression and there in lies the root of the lie.

In the Waking Times, author Tracy Kolenchuk looks at the logic of a depression diagnosis. What happens when someone is cured of depression? Let’s say their depression was actually caused by a nutritional deficiency. When the deficiency is corrected, their depression goes away – but did they ever really have depression in the first place, or did they just have malnutrition? She argues that the depression was a symptom of malnutrition in such a case rather than a mental health condition or disease.

An example we use in this class on psychiatry and mental health we use the example of our preference for energy psychology (BET/ EFT/ Tapping) which declares the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the bodies energy system. If your diagnosed “depressed” and by tapping an algorythm of acupuncture or energy points while reciting a declarative statement and afterwards your no longer depressed and or your depression goes away then were you actually depressed clinically? We would say your symptoms of depression were in fact not depression at all but were interpreted as such… they were actually symptoms of energy disruption in the meridian or energy body.

Author Tracy mentions the “bible ” of mental health currently the DSM-5, formerly the DSM-4 etc. She says “The DSM-5, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, is the official medical bureaucracy book of mental disorders. You might be surprised to learn that there are no cures for any mental disorder listed in the DMS-5. Not one. The DSM-5 does not recommend treatments, much less cures. The only reference to the word cure that I can find is “eventual cures for these conditions“. Cured is not defined for any mental disorder. At this time, by omission, according to the DSM-5, there are no cures.  Maybe, someday, eventually, but today? Not.”

The FDA rules (Human Drugs) states clearly that any cure can only be the result from the prescription of a chemical pharmaceutical or prescription drug. This is why, almost exclusively to a patient… everyone diagnosed with depression and or other mental illness is prescribed a chemical pharmaceutical, antidepressents, sleeping pills, stimulants etc. Most of these drugs have severe side-effects, many of them such as drug induced neurologic disorders such as “tardive dyskinosis” are debilitating and permanent!

My copy of the DSM-4 and or #5 reads the same as hers and for every mental health professional, doctor nurse, psychiatrist, psychologist etc. It explicitly makes no claims of any kind, anywhere to offers any cure for any psychiatric diagnosis!

Of course for me this presents a strong questions. When we have a client who has been diagnosed with depression and find them to be malnurished and give them good , safe clean and appropriate food and their depression goes away… were they actually, medically and legally diagnosed with depression? So we would say the symptoms called or described as depression were actually somatic, or psycho-emotional symptoms of Malnutrition.

Sometimes when we assess a patient or client who has been medically diagnosed with depression and is being medicated we find they have a history of exposure to toxins and or poisons including past prescriptive chemical drugs. When the toxins, poisons and drugs were reduced, eliminated or removed and the symptoms , all of the symptoms of depression went away, were they actually depressed or were they exhibiting symptoms of poisoning? No! The client was NOT depressed at all they were poisoned!

I mention this in class and Author Tracy Kolenchuk mentions also in her article… Depression might be caused by physical and or mental abuse. No amount of a chemical, pharmaceutical, anti-depressant etc. will stop physical and or emotional abuse in a home, work or social environment! If we address the parameters of the abusive situation, remove the abuser or remove the abused from that environment and address the issues directly and the depression goes away… was it actually a mental illness at all or was the depressive symptoms evidence of abuse?

We are not suggesting we can cure depression with Tapping, nutrition, supplements, detoxification and or abuse remediation strategies , policing etc. Depression is a mental illness and mental illness can NOT be cured according to modern western medicine and psychiatry.

However, we can cure that which in almost every case could lead someone to exhibit the symptoms which might be misinterpreted as depression.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ms. Kolenchuk when she states in her article “Every illness can be cured.  An illness is cured when the cause has been addressed when, healing has completed, and when no more medicines are required.”

Of course, sometimes, it’s more complicated. Sometimes, a case of depression is simple, elementary. But sometimes, a single case of depression has several causes. When a case of depression has many causes, it consists of many elements of illness. Each element must be cured by addressing the elementary cause.

Curing depression, sometimes, can be trivial. So trivial – that it is cured before it is diagnosed as depression. Sometimes, depression is cured – even after it has been diagnosed, but the medical bureaucracies are forced to judge it to be “in remission” or maybe it wasn’t really a depression “disease”.

Depression caused by malnutrition can lead to toxic relationships, to consuming toxic chemicals or drugs. Depression, simple depression, can become a downward spiral of illness. When a case of depression has a long and complex history – the cure can also be long and complex. But depression can be cured.”

At the SomaVeda College of Natural Medicine: Our traditions of Ayurveda, Yoga Therapy, Oriental Medicine, Traditional Naturopathy (Nature Cure) and of course Native American Indigenous Medicine have always offered concrete solutions and remedies for what is often misdiagnosed as mental illness and depression.

So, in consideration of the above ideas what are some workable, practical, functional strategies to bring relief from depressive symptoms?

1) SomaVeda Integrated Traditional Therapies® Thai Yoga and Ayurveda offer a comprehensive treatment pathway that covers in one way or another all of the solutions to bring relief to and or from depression and or the symptoms of depression. The various symptoms of depression manifest in the body, the mind and the spiritual areas of life. The indigenous, traditional approach is holistic and covers all these areas in concrete ways. We also offer a national directory of Certified Practitioners that can assist you personally. Go to: SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Practitioner Directory.

2) Sustainable Eating, healthy diet and nutrition which is not contaminated, toxic, GMO and which is appropriate for individual and bodytype. Recommended are strategies which emphasize “Dense Nutrition” appropriate for your bodytype.

3) Detox: Reduce and or eliminate toxins both internal and external i.e. detoxification regimen. This includes reduces use of chemical pharmaceutical and or prescriptive drugs used to treat depression which themselves are dangerous and toxic.

4) Reduce Inflammation, edema, interstitial and allergy related. Consider a Complex Decongestion Therapy protocol. See CDT Protocol.

5) Herbal Medicine: Consider using traditional Herbs and teas with historical and validated use in reducing symptoms of depression such as St. Johns Wort. and Valerian Root.

6) Homeopathic Medicine: Consider using Homeopathic Remedies for symptoms of depression. There are quite a few depending on the patient drug profile. This includes the use of “Bach” and similar “Flower Remedies” such as Bach’s Rescue Remedy.

7) Trace Minerals supplements such as in Fulvic/ Humic/ Iodine etc.

8) Elemental Based Therapies: Light, color, sound/ music, nature- Earthing/ Grounding, Mineral-crystal etc.

9) Energy Psychology (SomaVeda® B.E.T./ EFT- TFT etc.)

10) Bio-Magnetic Therapy: (Static Pole Magnetic protocols), PEMF (Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field Therapy)

11) Yoga and Meditation

12) Probiotics: probiotic supplements specifically designed to support positive mood by influencing the guy-brain axis through the micro-biome. The brain-gut axis is a bi-directional communication system, comprised of neural pathways, such as the enteric nervous system (ENS), vagus, sympathetic and spinal nerves, and humoral pathways, which include cytokines, hormones, and neuropeptides as signaling molecules.

13) Native American Medicine: Ceremony and Healing: It has been found that participating in traditional Native American Healing and medicine rituals such as “Inipi” or Sacred Sweat Lodge-Temascal, Caseuse or Chanupa Sacred Pipe or Breath Ceremony etc. can have tremendous curative powers over the symptoms of depression. The Native American Indigenous Church offers treatment options for functional medicine in the NAIC Tribal Wellness Center and Ceremony on a case by case basis.

The inability to cure disease is a deficiency of understanding than a lack or deficiency of remedies.
