Raw Food Risks and Solutions!

By Anthony B. James

Dr. Anthony B. James, Monastic Medical Physician

Virtually every class we hold at ACNM (American College of Natural Medicine) has one or more “Raw Foodists,” and this appears to be a growing trend. However, in conversation with them, there appears to be a lack of knowledge and uninformed prejudice regarding the risks of eating an exclusively raw food diet and the actual necessity and benefit of cooking and/or processing some foods.

Here at the ACNM and the Thai Yoga Center, we teach nutrition and healthy eating based on traditional principles. We stress the value of a predominantly plant-based diet in the most unadulterated state possible to support safe and dense nutrition.

As SomaVeda® Thai Yoga practitioners, nutrition advocacy is one of our most powerful and reliable adjuncts. However, there is no scientific or traditional support for the idea that eating raw food exclusively is healthy. Our ancient Native American culture consumed a varied and primarily plant-based diet consisting of both raw and cooked foods. Yet, there are definite and very clear health risks associated with the consumption of some raw foods.

Fact sheet No. 9.369, published by the Colorado State University Extension sites research, specifically addresses the prevalence and risk of E. coli in raw vegetables. “Fresh fruits and vegetables once were thought to be relatively free of disease-producing pathogens. In recent years, however, outbreaks of foodborne illness linked to fruits and vegetables have become more common.

These outbreaks come from produce grown both in the United States and in other countries. Outbreaks have been linked to Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella on apples, lettuce, cantaloupe, and sprouts; Listeria monocytogenes on cabbage and cantaloupe; Shigella on parsley and lettuce; and Cyclospora on imported raspberries.”

“Root crops and leafy vegetables have the greatest risk of infection from manure application to soil. They can also become contaminated through direct or indirect contact with cattle, deer, and sheep. E. coli O157:H7 is most prevalent in ruminants in general and in cattle in particular (both beef and dairy). Other known carriers include birds, insects, and squirrels.

While the bacteria do not appear to make these animals sick, the animals carry and shed the bacteria in their feces. Drinking and recreational water have been carriers in several outbreaks, most likely from fecal contamination by infected animals or people.”

Truth is, we have no way to verify from garden to table that there has been no vector of contamination somewhere along the line.

These bacterial and fungal contaminants can produce life-threatening illness especially in persons with lowed or challenged immune systems. For specific details, read the full report at (http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09369.html)

What about my favorite Super Raw Foods, such as Raw Cacao?

I love chocolate as much as the next person. I helped build a Cacao farm in Ecuador a few years ago (see photo) and was convinced of the benefits of raw chocolate.

However, recent studies and revelations have come to mind to discourage me from other than the occasional use of raw, uncooked chocolate. Sad, I know, but I want to be healthy, and I want my clients to be healthy. The main issue with unprocessed or raw chocolate is pathogenic Mycotoxins such as Aflatoxin and Ochratoxin A, which can cause the following effects: Neurotoxic (destroys nervous tissue), Immunosuppressive (suppresses immune function), Genotoxic (causes genetic mutations), Carcinogenic (cancer-causing), Teratogenic (causes birth defects).

Dr. Anthony James in Ecuador at the SMOKH Loma Linda Cacao Farm.

One study makes the following points:

  • “The occurrence of aflatoxins and ochratoxin A in chocolate was investigated.”
  • “Ochratoxin A was present in 98% of the evaluated chocolate samples.”
  • “Aflatoxins co-occurred in 80% of the samples contaminated with ochratoxin A.”
  • “Tendency of higher amounts of mycotoxins as higher is the cocoa solids content.”

This strongly suggests that safer chocolate is roasted chocolate!

What does the CDC say about Foodborne Illness?

Apparently, quite a lot!

“We estimate that foodborne diseases cause approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths in the United States each year.”  (Mead PS, Slutsker L, Dietz V, McCaig LF, Bresee JS, Shapiro C, et al. Food-Related Illness and Death in the United States. Emerg Infect Dis [serial on the Internet]. 1999, Oct [date cited]. Available from http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/5/5/99-0502.htm)

According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control) references, to have a safer food experience:

CLEANhttp://www.cdc.gov/Other/disclaimer.html: Wash produce.

  • Rinse fresh fruits and vegetables in running tap water to remove visible dirt and grime.
  • Remove and discard the outermost leaves of a head of lettuce or cabbage.
  • Because bacteria can grow well on the cut surface of fruit or vegetables, be careful not to contaminate these foods while slicing them up on the cutting board, and avoid leaving cut produce at room temperature for many hours.
  • Don’t be a source of foodborne illness yourself.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water before preparing food.
  • Avoid preparing food for others if you yourself have a diarrheal illness.
  • Changing a baby’s diaper while preparing food is a bad idea that can easily spread illness.

(http://www.cdc.gov/foodsafety/facts.html – whatprotect)

Of course, I would also recommend avoiding consuming any foods that are inherently risky or likely candidates for contamination.

No food is automatically and exclusively safe from contamination!

According to The Partnership for Food Safety Education (http://www.fightbac.org/): “Despite progress improving the quality and safety of foods, the CAST report explains, “any raw agricultural product can be contaminated. Bacteria may survive despite aggressive controls at the processing level, or the food may become contaminated somewhere along the way during transport, preparation, cooking, serving, and storage.” (http://www.fightbac.org/about-foodborne-illness/challenges)

It has to do with the growing risk of Microbial and Mycological hazards. They cite the nonprofit Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST), which has reported that zero risk of microbiological hazards is not possible and no method will eliminate all pathogens or toxins from the food chain (“Food Safety and Fresh Produce: An Update”, 2009).

What can I do to have a safer experience consuming vegetables and raw foods?

There are a few opinions but there is also within them a generally accepted standard for the safety of your veggies. The recommendations stated in the above-referenced reports are:

Food handling and preparation practices are the last line of defense for preventing infection from E. coli O157:H7 and other foodborne pathogens. The following actions can help ensure the safety of the food you serve. They are especially important if you or those you are serving are at risk for foodborne illness. The groups at highest risk include pregnant women and infants, children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

  • Wash hands thoroughly before working with food and after using the toilet, changing diapers, handling animals or helping people who have diarrhea.
  • Thoroughly wash raw fruits and vegetables just before preparing or eating them. This not only helps remove dirt, bacteria, and stubborn garden pests, but it also helps remove residual pesticides. Separate and individually rinse the leaves of spinach and lettuce. Peel potatoes, carrots, yams, and other root vegetables, or clean them well with a firm scrub brush under lukewarm running water. Pat dry with paper towels.
  • Clean and sanitize cutting boards, utensils, and surface areas used to prepare any raw food before using them to prepare another product, especially if that food will be eaten raw. Use 3/4 teaspoon of chlorine bleach per quart.
  • Avoid cross-contamination between raw and cooked foods. Store fresh meat below produce in the refrigerator. Never place cooked meat on an unwashed plate that holds raw meat.
  • Cook ground meats thoroughly to 160 degrees F. Check the internal temperature with a thermometer.
  • Don’t drink raw milk. Also, avoid unpasteurized juices or ciders.
  • Use only safe, treated water.
  • Refrigerate leftovers promptly.

Rinsing some produce, such as leafy greens, with a vinegar solution (1/2 cup distilled white vinegar per 2 cups water) followed by a clean water rinse has been shown to reduce bacterial contamination but may affect the taste.

Although bleach is recommended as a cleaning and disinfecting agent, I totally disagree with its use! Instead of chlorine bleach, which is disastrous for the environment and life on earth, I recommend using one or more of the following: Oxygenated Water, Colloidal Silver, or Vinegar. They are safe and do not cause contamination themselves!

I also don’t agree with the prohibition of Raw Milk and Dairy, provided that the origin is safe and reliable. Raw milk has been proven to have many health benefits over its pasteurized cousin. (http://www.realmilk.com/health/health-benefits-of-raw-milk-from-grass-fed-animals/)

Closing ideas on Raw Food Risks and Solutions!:

Be informed about your food choices and do the research on what you eat! No foods are inherently risk-free. This includes water. The best way to guarantee the quality of your food is to grow your own or cooperate with someone who does. Buy or use the freshest, cleanest, organic, local foods. Keep yourself and your preparation practices clean.

Always properly handle and clean your veggies or other foods properly and avoid cross-contamination issues. Rotate your diet to avoid toxic saturation, including allergens. Avoid eating Raw Chocolate in other than small amounts and on rare occasions!

What is Vitality?

Vitalology™ is the subject of study; a branch of knowledge, assessment, and practice of cultivating the state of being strong, active, and energetic by building vitality and health through specific wellness, lifestyle, nutrition, diet, energetics, and educational/informational programs. Vitalology™ is a wellness art and lifestyle for the 21st century.

Vitalology™ is the assessment and practice of cultivating the state of being strong, active, and energetic by building vitality and wellness through specific waters, lifestyle, nutrition, diet, energetics, sunlight, and educational/informational programs. Vitalology™ is a wellness art and lifestyle for the 21st century. It is not ‘medicine’ as defined as the diagnosis and treatment of a disease.

Our three vital nutrients are Sunlight, Oxygen, and Water. Food is the stored energy that makes life function and allows our bodies to work and think!

Any imbalance or deficiency of sunlight, air, water, and food will weaken the body and, in time, perish. The fundamental of our philosophy we call vitalology™.

Vitalists subscribe to the use of health-building foods, herbs, minerals, waters, flowers, seeds, barks, roots, and essential oils in their natural state, sunshine, fresh air, bathing, as well as exercise, meditation, sunbathing, prayer, dance, chirothesia, and other vitalistic arts.

All Services performed and consultations are private under NAIC Membership RPG exclusively. No services are offered to the public.

One Hundred Benefits of SomaVeda® Thai Yoga and Traditional Thai Massage

The 100 Benefits of SomaVeda® Thai Yoga

Benefits of SomaVeda with Ajahn Dr. J

The 100 benefits of SomaVeda® Thai Yoga is the title of this article; however, as many of the benefits listed here contain more than one listed benefit? There are many more than a hundred! There are many times more than 1oo benefit. It matters not whether we separate them according to traditional, anecdotal, or scientifically verified or documented literature and studies…

What research and benefits I have collected must be a drop in the bucket! At best, they represent the easiest to find or most commonly observed. In actual practice, the list is endless and ever-growing. Such is the possibility of the vital contribution to the world’s health and well-being that this healing arts and its derivatives represent.

They are also known as Traditional Thai Medical Massage (Ryksaa Thang Nuad Phaen Boran Thai) or slang as “Thai Massage’. SomaVeda® Thai Yoga, as a sophisticated, elegant, evolving, traditional, and well-researched Indigenous System of Natural Medicine, has many benefits.

In today’s questioning and cynical world, it is essential to experience and share this practice’s documented traditional outcomes and benefits with its ancient roots. Developed for thousands of years in the old traditional Buddhist and Ayurveda healing centers of South Asia, Thailand, and Southeast Asia, Thai Traditional Medicine: Thai Traditional Massage and Thai Ayurveda continues to develop as an elegant, evolving internationally recognized traditional medicine.

The primary benefits traditionally were spiritual, psychological, and emotional. They are based on the concept of “Promiiwiihan Sii,” or Four Boundless/Unlimited States of Mind and Being: Love, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity. There are almost too many secondary physical/ structural, practical, healing, and medical benefits of learning Thai Yoga and sharing and practicing as an expert! Truthfully, we can say that learning Traditional Thai Yoga, as a genuine alternative medicine, is an excellent alternative to massage therapy or allopathic medicine in most instances.

Please note: when we say “Traditional Thai Yoga or a style such as SomaVeda® Thai Yoga,” we mean styles or traditional systems that incorporate the whole gamut of traditional remedies, including but not limited to Spiritual, Mental- Psychological, Energy, and Frequency-based protocols, Emotional and physical… including biologic issues with an emphasis on all areas of life such as Mindfulness and Puja, Sacred Nutrition and eating strategies for medicinal food and balancing diets, use of all medicinal herbs and conjunctive strategies using foods, herbs, aromatics, minerals, salts, water & juices accompanied with both facilitated and self-meditation, Yoga (Reusi Dotton), Traditional Thai Physical Therapy (TPT/ TTPT), Traditional Chinese Tuina Massage “Nuad Chin,” hands-on (Marma-chikitsa). One good example of a complex traditional therapy is “Nuat Prakhop Samun Prai,” or Thai Herbal Compress/ Poultice or Herb – aroma therapy Balls conjunctive with Thai Yoga Chirothesia (hands-on).

Please Note! The list below needs to be more comprehensive and is growing daily as new scientific research comes to light!

Stretching Towards the Heavens, Christian Insights into Yoga Therapy:

Yoga Therapy incorporates various physical and mental practices to promote overall health. Yoga therapy is an increasingly popular approach to holistic well-being. However, some Christian practitioners have expressed concerns about the compatibility of yoga-yoga Therapy with their faith. In examining this topic, it is essential to explore the biblical concept of Chirothesia, which refers to the laying on of hands for healing.

Surprisingly, Yoga Therapy can be seen through the lens of Chirothesia, and this highlights its potential as a healing practice for Christian practitioners. Christian believers have expressed concerns about Yoga’s origins in Eastern spiritual traditions and its potential conflicts with their faith.

These concerns often revolve around the fear of compromising Christian beliefs and values.

However, it is essential to approach this topic with an open mind and seek understanding. When considering the practice of Yoga Therapy, we find a striking parallel to the biblical concept of Chirothesia. Chirothesia involves the physical touch and prayerful intervention for healing.

This biblical term is mentioned in various passages in the New Testament, such as in Mark 16:18, where Jesus instructs his followers that believers will lay hands on the sick for their healing. Drawing this connection between Yoga Therapy and Chirothesia invites us to explore the potential harmonies between these practices.

Examine the Foundations

By examining the foundational principles of yoga therapy and understanding the healing aspects of the Yoga Therapy practice, we can discern how it can align with Christian values and beliefs.

This book will delve into the foundations of Christ-centered Yoga Therapy, its healing benefits, and its principles that are shared with Christian teachings. We will also explore how Christ-centered yoga Therapy is adapted to accommodate Christian beliefs and intentions.

By seeking guidance from Christian yoga-Christ-Centered practitioners who have integrated their faith into their practice, we can understand how yoga therapy is a methodology of Chirothesia (Hands-on Healing, Meditation, and Religious Therapeutics) for Christian practitioners.

Ultimately, this booklet provides a perspective encouraging thoughtful exploration and dialogue among Christian practitioners.

We consider the potential compatibility between Christ-centered and Chirothesia. We discover how these practices complement and contribute to Christian individuals’ physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Let’s Dig Deep Into What Is Thai Yoga Therapy?

Ajahn, Dr. James Demo Seated Rotation2

SomaVeda Integrated Traditional Therapies®

Let’s Dig Deep Into What Is Thai Yoga Therapy?

By Anthony B. James: February 28th. 2023

What are the additional expected benefits of SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Programs and Therapy?

The secondary/ incidental outcomes are of lesser importance and may or may not share characteristics similar to or common to many Western massage and massage therapy forms. Some hands-on are similar to effleurage (stroking and kneading the muscles), manipulation (manipulating or aligning osseous or skeletal parts), and pressure point or acupressure style technique (applying deep, consistent pressure to specific nerves, tendons, or ligaments and acupoints or Lom).

To balance the functions of the Four Ayurveda Dosha or body elements called thâat tháng sìi (Thai Lang.) (Lom, Fai, Din, Naam), SomaVeda® Thai Yoga incorporates elements of Prayer, Energetic and Prana Assessment, Mindfulness, Gentle Rocking, Asana Positional Release, Deep Stretching, Focused Breathing or Prana Yama, Chakra balancing, Prana Nadi or Sen Line Balancing, Dancing, Recitation of Sacred Mantra, Dancing Meditation and Dance Therapy (Flow/ Vinyasa), Movement Re-patterning and Rhythmic Compression to create a singular healing experience. It is pretty common for sessions and programs to be performed with music. SomaVeda® Thai Yoga, a traditional form of Yoga practice and therapy, also incorporates Ayurvedic Medical Herbology (sacrament), Pancha Karma Detoxification, Meditation, Blessing, and healing prayers in its great toolbox of healing modalities.

Thai Yoga Ayurveda Textbooks: For more specific details, I recommend reading the reference textbooks “Ayurveda of Thailand” and “Ayurveda and Thai Yoga, Religious Therapeutics Theory and Practice.”

Where Can I Learn Thai Yoga and Traditional Thai Massage?

 1) The Native American Indigenous Church (N.A.I.C.) provides a registry of approved schools and teachers of SomaVeda® style Thai Yoga, Thai Massage, and Authorized and Approved Certified Providers.
N.A.I.C. Members are legally entitled to practice SomaVeda® Thai yoga massage in all fifty states. Of course, that means as long as what is practiced does not violate existing medical laws or the practice is under the umbrella of an ecclesiastical authority or organization. We are happy to answer any questions about the legal practice of our energetic and spiritually-based art of healing and transformation.

2) The Thai Yoga Center: In the U.S. today, the traditional lineages of Thai Yoga and Thai Massage are passed on via the in Brooksville, Florida through the Mastery and teaching of Ajahn, Dr. Anthony B. James D.N.M(.P), N.D. (T), D.O.M., Ph.D., M.D.(AM), D.P.H.C.(h.c.), M.Sc., R.A.A.P., SMOKH. Ajahn, Dr. James, Ordained Minister, Diplomat, and Licentiate Monastic physician, after 34 plus years of extensive devotion, practice, and research, brings several different and complimentary traditional lineages to life.

The Native American Indigenous Church, Inc. (N.A.I.C.) and the Thai Yoga Center represent and support authentic Traditional Thai Medicine (T.T.M.), Thai culture, and healing arts. Our member instructors have directly authorized teachers, representatives, and traditional lineage holders in several different conventional secular and Buddhist schools:
•    Buddhai Sawan Institute & Wat Buddhai Sawan Ayudthaya and Nongkam (Buddhist temple and institute famous for both martial and healing arts for 900 years)
•    Phra Wat Chetuphon (Buddhist Temple, Wat Po Traditional Thai Medical School…One of the oldest schools of traditional arts)
•    Buntautuk Hilltribes Northern Provincial Hospital and Training Institute is known as “The Old Medicine Hospital of Shivago Komarpai.”•    ITM (International Thai Massage, Chiangmai)
•    Mama Lek Chaiya
•    The Foundation for the Blind
•   Aachan Tawee:  Buddhist Temple Wat Sawankholok, School for the Blind
•   Wangklaikangwon Industrial Community & Educational College program sponsored by the late H.M. King Bhumibol, Anantasuk Traditional Thai Massage

There are several other significant lineages, teachers, and Grand Masters. Most important is the Buddhism medicine derived from the famous Saint Shivago (Jivaka). In the United States, traditional lineage and teaching are primarily passed on via the educational programs of the S.C.N.M.: SomaVeda College of Natural Medicine/ School of Ayurveda: Thai Yoga Center in Brooksville, FL.

We recognize all schools formally recognized by the Royal Thai Ministries of Health and of Education and The Union of Thai Traditional Medicine Society (U.T.T.S.) listed or not!

Learn Thai Yoga In Thailand!

Thailand December 2023

There are many different traditional “schools” of Thai yoga massage. They range from the big university-driven or supported programs of Bangkok to the “family” style oral and traditional lineages of Thailand’s Northern Hill Tribe people, such as Karen, Lisu, Lahu, Mien, and Akha People. Their influence is a growing factor in the modern expression of Thai Massage, especially in the North.

Thai Yoga is an every day or geographically unique system. Modern Thai yoga “massage” synthesizes several different regional variations based on location, region, and in some cases,s the specific influence of a charismatic teacher. Traditionally there was mention of the “Seven Schools.” Of course, there were not in the past only seven schools! Considering this was the primary medicine of millions of people for over a thousand years,s it is logical to assume there were many different schools in operation at one time or another. For example, every temple teaching or practicing these healing arts could have been considered a school; there were hundred,s if not thousand,s of these over the years.

The most famous traditional school in the North is The Buntautuk Northern Hill Tribe Medical Hospital or “The Old Medicine Hospital.” Renowned schools and head Masters, such as Anantasuk Rongrian under Phaa Kruu Anantasuk and Aachan Nantipa Anantasuk, work with the King’s Rajaprajanugroh projects to thoroughly document the traditional medicine and preserve its rich heritage. Under Grand Master Aajan Sintorn Chaichagun (Transitioned November 2005), it has become a national and international phenomenon. Teaching various levels of programs to Thai and farang (foreigners) alike, Aajan Sintorn was also famous for his daily recitation of the Pali Om Namo Shivago prayer and invocation for blessing. Twice daily, he would lead the entire community in this rhythmic and beautiful traditional mantra for healing. In the North, they say, “You don’t know Thai Massage until you know this mantra!” Today the Wat Po Association of Traditional Doctors, member schools, and Ajahn’s or Master Instructors are bringing this work into the modern world.,

Northern Thailand is closer to mainland China, so more Chinese and Laotion-influenced massage techniques exist. For example, a well-known teacher and practitioner in Chiangmai, Mama Lek Chaiya, and her family teach “nûat jàp sên” (nerve-touch massage. This Chinese-style massage technique, like acupuncture, works with the body’s nerve meridians. Some plucking techniques are reminiscent of Tuina and can be pretty unpleasant. However, the ultimate aim of balancing the chi takes precedence over comfort!

It is important to remember that any applications of physical pressure are intended to convey the ProMiiwihan Sii to balance and harmonize the “thâat tháng sìi” and Tri_dosha or Three Winds, Humor or energetically based body types. Thai Yoga is a sophisticated system of exchanging love with pressure, as a hug can convey care, consideration, and love with physical force. It’s just that in Thai Yoga that loving embrace is told with great detail and sophistication.

The practice of Thai Yoga is substantially based on principles of classical Ayurveda as described in the Caraka Samhita Sutra, Susrita Samhita Sutra, Gheranda Samhita, Atharvaveda, Pradipika, and Ramayana, without most of the overt references to Hindu deities. Ayurvedic practices emphasized in Thai Yoga include Samkhya (Sanskrit= Satkhya), Creation Cosmology, Rajas, Satvas and Tamas, Dhatus, Doshas, Sen Lines (Prana Nadi), Lom (Wind Gates, Sanskrit= Marma), Pancha Karma, Asana, Prana Yama, and Mantra. The philosophies and principles of these Ayurvedic texts have also been re-interpreted in Theravada Buddhism. Two influential texts in the Theravada system are the Buddha Dharma and the Vipassana Bhavana.

The four Thai Ayurvedic elements are earth (din-solid parts of the body, including nerves, skeleton, muscles, blood vessels, tendons, and ligaments); water (náam-blood and bodily secretions); fire (fai-digestion and metabolism); and air (lom-respiration, and circulation). Borrowing from India’s Ayurvedic tradition, some practitioners employ Pali-Sanskrit terms for the four bodily elements: pathavidhatu, apodhatu, tecodhatu, and vayodhatu. The book “Lines, Wheels, Points and Specific Remedies” covers this theory in detail.

Thai Yoga Therapy and or Thai massage (Traditional Thai Massage) are systems of yoga therapy, and all aspects of Somaveda® Thai Yoga follow Ayurvedic and yogic principles.

From the Ayutthaya period until early this century, the Thai government’s Department of Health included an official massage division (phanâek mãw nûat). Under the influence of international medicine and modern hospital development, the national propagation/maintenance of temple-based Thai Ayurveda was eventually transferred to Phra Wat Chetaphon (Wat Pho) in Bangkok, where it remains today. Traditional Yoga therapy has persisted in most provinces and has recently been a resurgence in popularity throughout the country. The Wat Po system is divided into two separate and distinctive categories: the tourist massage pavilion and Tourist massage school (Rongrian Sala Thaang Nuat) and the School for Traditional Medicine for training and certification of Maw Nuad (Massage Doctors). There are considerable differences in the term and quality of movement. For example, a tourist may receive an introductory massage certificate in as little as ten days. In contrast, the whole program for Maw Nuad is twelve to fourteen semesters or four full years. In the United States, we have many different levels of recognition for Certified Thai Yoga/Massage Practitioners.

The Royal Thai Ministry of Health relies on the Union of Thai Traditional Medicine Society (U.T.T.S.) to formulate and maintain standards of practice and competency necessary for the formal licensing of secular, non-religious professional Traditional Thai Medicine providers in the kingdom.

Within the traditional Thai medical context, a Thai Yoga massage therapist (mãw nûat, literally, ‘massage doctor’) usually applies Thai Yoga together with pharmacological (herbal) and psycho-spiritual treatments as prescribed for a specific problem or specific imbalance of the Dosha or winds and humor of the body, mind, and spirit. It is becoming quite popular for many Thais to use traditional Thai Yoga as a relaxation and disease prevention tool rather than for a specific medical problem. However, once you leave the big city and move into the country, you will see more reliance on energy-based medicine. This includes the resurgence and growing popularity of the self-treatment regimes and Yoga practices of “Reusi Dotan” or Reishi Yoga.

Thai Yoga (Thai Massage: slang), SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Therapy Are NOT Massage or Massage Therapy!

The term “Thai Massage” is Western slang, promoted mainly by tourists in Thailand. Although time is now standard, it is still misunderstood and misused by the misinformed. It is easy to be confused when similar words, such as “Massage,” but legally, there are distinctions and differences in definitions. Thai Yoga, Traditional Thai Yoga, and “Thai massage” is not the same as “Massage,” “Massage Therapy,” or “bodywork,” as commonly defined in so-called “Massage Laws.”

Please note: In everyday English, when we use the word “massage,e,” we do not mean it in the same context as the typical Western usage. In the West, “Massage” means something like a “rub down” for money or “Systems of activity applied to the soft tissues of the human body for therapeutic, educational, or relaxation purposes” and is primarily referring to mechanical and or manipulative systems derived from Swedish Massage and Massage Therapy. “Thai Yoga and or Thai Massage” (Phaen Boran Ráksãa Thaang Nûat) is entirely unrelated!

Legally words can have different meanings than words used in common, non-legal language. For example, “Massage and Massage Therapy” definitions are based on the practice of “Swedish massage.” “Swedish Massage” is new (less than one hundred years) in European and American culture. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, “The term “massage therapy” encompasses many different techniques (see box for examples). In general, therapists press, rub, and otherwise manipulate the body’s muscles and other soft tissues. They often use their hands and fingers but may use their forearms, elbows, or feet”.

Compare this definition with the definition given for what is Thai Yoga at the beginning of this article “Thai Yoga is comprehensive, sophisticated spiritual, philosophical and energy-based healing arts derivative of Theraveda Buddhism, Buddhist medicine, Buddhist Psychology, Theraveda Vipassana Bhavana, Classical Indian and Tibetan Ayurveda and Yoga Vedanta. ”

Thai yoga therapy (Thai Massage) sounds similar to Western-style massage at first glance, but what is not mentioned in the proceeding definition is that Indigenous Traditional Thai Massage (ITTM/ TTM) is a spiritual, i.e., Ayurveda-based system of healing and movement education (Yoga). It is based entirely on principles of Classical Indian/ Thai Ayurveda, energy balancing (Sen, Tri-Dosha, Lom, Chakra, etc.,) and the actual touching, contact, or soft tissue manipulation is incidental to, and not the central aim of the practice! Again, I want to emphasize this statement: “It is possible to have a Thai Yoga session with little or no actual touching.” However, touching is good! Many spiritual traditions demand believers and followers to “Lay Hands On The Sick, Lame, Blind, Deming” as a sacred duty and responsibility. This work brings fundamental elements and energy into harmony, creating wholeness of mind, body, and spirit.

Thai Ayurveda, Thai Yoga (traditional thai massage) is a spiritually based Chirothesia and or Somatic technique and profession, a modality with standards established in the Buddhist holistic centers and temples thousands of years ago. It has a documented code of ethics known as the Buddha Dharma, The Eight Fold Path, Ahimsa (non-violence), and the “Ten Rules of the Healer.” The Native American Indigenous Church has adopted this healing tradition as an Indigenous Traditional Native Medicine as it is ideally suited for both Native and non-native persons alike to share and practice. Both U.N. and International Treaties and the U.S. Federal code protect traditional Indigenous Medicine and healing practices. See N.A.I.C. Legal Compliance.

There is an established criterion for education and professional practice for services that were never intended to be “Massage” or “Massage therapy.”

Although we teach and practice SomaVeda® Thai Yoga as a spiritual healing modality, we do not require nor promote its practice as exclusive of any faith or religion. Thai Yoga is suitable as a non-sectarian practice of healing for persons of any faith or belief.
