Thai Traditional “Krabi Kabrong” , Nongkam, Thailand. Kabri-Kabrong is the Traditional Martial Arts system of Thailand and one of the great martial arts traditions of the world.

In addition to the Buddhai Sawan Kabri Kabrong Sword Fighting and Muay Boran systems (Fan Dap & Lerd Rit), Grand Master Phaa Khruu Samaii introduced Dr. James to the spiritual, meditative (Vipassana) and Traditional Thai Ayurveda and Nuad Phaen Boran Thai adjunct to the Buddhai Sawan fighting tradition.

Buddhai Sawan Teachers, Masters, and Grandmasters have always practiced traditional medicine to address the many injuries that typically occur during intensive training. The conventional medicine practices of the Buddhai Sawan tradition are based on the Ayurveda of Thailand (See History of Ayurveda of Thailand) (Thai Traditional Medicine and Thai Traditional Physical Therapy).

UNESCO heritage: Traditional Thai massage added to ‘cultural heritage’ list

Wat Po, Thai Traditional Massage, Thai Yoga Center USA

The Amazing and beneficial traditional Thai massage (Thai Yoga Therapy- Thai Traditional Medicine Ayurveda) has been added to a prestigious UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE list.

Somaveda® Thai Yoga Massage Therapy Facilitated Cobra yoga posture

After bringing the Traditional Thai Healing Arts to the US in 1984 and then writing and publishing the first textbook in English on Nuad Thai, Traditional Thai Medicine Massage also in 1984, I feel this is one more vindication of just how important and significant Thai Traditional Healing arts are for the modern world.

NUAD THAI: The Thai Yoga Center’s SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Practitioner Certification program is the oldest continuous Traditional Thai Massage program in the US!

According to the BBC Post December 13th. 2019

“Nuad Thai” is now part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which features traditions and practices passed across the generations.

By being part of the list, Thai massage has been officially recognized as something to be preserved for future generations.

UNESCO is the United Nations’ agency for education, culture, and science.

The intangible cultural heritage list is separate from the world heritage list, which recognizes buildings and sites of prominence.

There are 550 items on the cultural heritage list – split into three categories – from 127 countries.

Items are added every year, with this year’s committee meeting in Bogota, Colombia.

Ayurvedic Thai Table Class

Unlike conventional massages, Thai Traditional massage is actually a spiritually based science of traditional medicine based on classical Buddhist Ayurveda. It focuses on the practical expression of loving kindness as the root of healing all diseases. As a form of traditional Yoga Therapy is incorporates sequences of You Asana or therapeutic postures to bring energy, attention, consciousness, breath and pressure to the client. Adjunct practices incorporate Diet, Vedic Nutrition, Lifestyle and teachings for emotional and mental health.

Description according to UNESCO:

“Nuad Thai, traditional Thai massage is regarded as part of the art, science and culture of traditional Thai healthcare. As a non-medicinal remedy and manual therapy, it involves bodily manipulation in which the practitioner helps rebalance the patient’s body, energy and structure to treat illnesses believed to be caused by the obstruction of energy flow along ‘sen’, lines understood to crisscross the human body. This manipulation is intended to normalize the four body elements: earth, water, wind and fire. To open up blocked routes, Nuad Thai therapists perform a combination of manipulations using their hands, elbows, knees and feet, together with herbal hot compresses to reduce inflammation. Presently, Nuad Thai is classified into two main types: Nuad Thai therapy and Nuad Thai for health promotion.”

Dive DEEPER into “What is Thai Traditional Massage”?

Therapists use not only their hands but sometimes their forearms and knees to apply pressure.

According to Unesco, the practice has its “roots in self-care in Thai peasant society of the past, [where] every village had massage healers whom villagers would turn to when they had muscle aches from working the field”. However, UNESCO in this brief summary does not address the ancient roots of Ayurveda Medicine which the “Thai Peasants” knew and practiced for millennium.

According to Unesco, the intangible culture heritage list seeks to recognize things that are “important to preserve for future generations… [like] songs sung and stories told”.

It adds that these things “form part of a heritage and this requires active effort to safeguard it”.

Thai Massage Training

Foundations, Advanced & Therapeutic Thai Massage Training

Detailed and comprehensive Traditional Thai Massage training apprenticeships in Foundations, Advanced, and Therapeutic Thai Massage bring the student the most authentic and traditional style of training. Thai Massage training is intensive and teach students to think for themselves and practice Traditional Thai Ayurveda-based treatment protocols at the therapeutic level rather than learning fluffy, stretching-focused, repetitive entry-level technique.

Unlike massage or massage therapy programs, students learn a comprehensive and traditional system of indigenous conventional medicine from day one and can study one-to-one with the instructor. Learning as in a traditional Thai-style apprenticeship through watching, practicing, and immersion-style format is the most focused and intensive way of learning. Our SomaVeda® Thai Yoga programs are famous worldwide, and our program is the oldest original Traditional Thai Medical Massage program in the US, full-time since 1984! Our Florida State DOE Authorized College of Natural Medicine, Ayurveda, and the Thai Yoga Center is located in beautiful Brooksville, Florida.

Other programs claim to be traditional and stress a traditional Thai-style approach. However, the student should ask, “upon what traditional apprenticeship and authentic traditional school method is their approach based?” See verifiable references here! Our chief instructor Ajahn, Dr. Anthony B. James, is recognized as a master teacher and professor of Thai Traditional Medicine by The UTTS, Ministry of Thai Traditional Medicine, and is a Certified Aachan and professor in the Anantasuk School of Thai Traditional Medicine and the Wat Po Association of Thai Traditional Medical Schools.

If any instructor claiming to operate a “traditional ” apprenticeship program approaches you and can not provide similar or equal documentation… Run Away!

Our apprentice program offers over 4000 hrs. of college-level education & courses, certifications, and degrees. No other Traditional Thai Massage program provides so much. New apprentice students begin with the 164 hr. 13-day intensive training… When we say intensive training, we mean it! Typical course days run from 8:30 am to 10:00 pm.

Click here for a complete description of the pre-requisite course for new apprentices and students!

SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS FOR NEW STUDENTS. More than intensive, personal, hands-on professional training and education. As an NAIC (Native American Indigenous Church) operated seminary, we are not doing this for the money! NAIC Inc. is a Florida State Chartered, IRS Compliant 508 (c)1(A) FBO- Faith-based, religious/ Church and Federally registered Tribal Organization. This means not only are donations to NAIC Tax Deductable, but that NAIC offers the MOST Generous Tuition Grant and scholarship program in the industry. See for yourself how we can generously offer five different Tier Level Grants.

Unlike other so-called traditional schools, we represent living traditions of Ayurveda and Thai Traditional Medicine with verifiable permission and authorization. Our Aachan is recognized as an Aachan or Professor of Thai medicine and has the verifiable recognition to prove it! Ajahn, Dr. Anthony B. James Bio.

No one better here in the US or Thailand to teach you this traditional healing work than a Thai-recognized master teacher with 39 years of full-time teaching experience teaching Thai Medicine and traditional healing arts.

There is more than technique involved in running a healing practice and making a living as a Traditional Thai Massage practitioner! Since our school is a complete and comprehensive natural medicine and college of Ayurveda, we can teach you everything you need to start, maintain and prosper in your Traditional Thai Massage-based healing practice.

Please note some of the adjunct coursework apprentices receive training in…

More than 27 distinctive adjunct and clinical practices are offered to every apprentice and included at NO Additional Fee!

The complete apprentice-style program will take an average student two to four years to complete (with an SCNM College Doctor of Ayurveda PhD. degree); however, the initial commitment is only 17 days! The student must practice and do the required homework between modules to assimilate and absorb all the instruction. Ajahn, Dr. Anthony James, and senior staff teachers ensure you stay on track.

Legal Guidelines!

What’s the point of being an apprentice in a traditional Thai Massage program if you are not legally practicing everything you have learned? We assure you that when you complete our program and follow our legal guidelines taught in class, you’re perfectly legal to practice in all 50 states and 100 countries outside the US! Most, if not all, programs of a study calling themselves “Thai,” regardless of how good their technique is, can not give you a legal basis to practice! We are a Federally Registered Native American Indigenous Tribal Organization, and our right to practice our religious therapeutics is established and protected under two different federal codes. Some schools try to misdirect students into enrolling in Massage Therapy programs and applying for a massage license to practice… Falsely implying that you’re legal to practice Traditional Thai Massage with a “Massage License”… This is also patently false, misleading, and unethical. These schools will not be able to offer you any assistance should a massage board or state medical board come after you! We can provide all our apprentices with a legal basis for practice upon request.

Could you not take our word for it?

WHAT IS THAI MASSAGEWat Po, Bangkok Thailand

We offer Traditional Thai Massage/ Thai yoga certifications and Thai Yoga and Thai massage continuing education (C.E.U.s)classes /credits, often blended and called Thai yoga massage in Florida and other states. This combination of skills has become the SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Practitioner Certification program at the Thai Yoga Center in Brooksville, Florida. Our education is geared toward teaching students the proper skills for a long career in healing therapies as well as helping seasoned practitioners by offering both traditional and bio-mechanically correct ways to
do their work.

SomaVeda® Thai Yoga is sophisticated, elegant, and at the same time, intensive practice,
however, the rewards are dramatic and enormous.

Most healing practitioners and massage professionals find this way of working based on a well-developed and ancient practice to be as healthy for themselves as their clients.

Students themselves find positive and beneficial changes happening to their bodies during and after course completion!

It is not unusual for students enrolled in SomaVeda® style traditional Thai Yoga massage courses to experience an increased range of motion, breakthroughs in dealing with emotional issues, and weight loss!

The training is intense and focused on our primary outcomes, which are to prepare you to be able to start or add a productive, profitable practice the next day after you graduate! SomaVeda® Thai Yoga programs are professional and competency-based. We take the time necessary to give you, the practitioner, the concrete foundations to be successful and safe. Unlike other programs which seem to follow the “Tourist” or non-professional model…

If you are already a healthcare professional or Massage Therapist, for example… you will be amazed at the refinements and grace this work will bring to your practice. Additionally, it will likely reduce any occupational or repetitive stress type of occupational disorders you may already be experiencing. One of the several textbooks introduced in the SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Practitioner Certification program, “Ayurveda of Thailand,” was voted the best Ayurveda textbook of 2017 and received the Veda Vasya Award! SomaVeda® system is the modern iteration of several well-established original, genuine named Thai Medical Institutions, and Dr. Anthony B. James directs our school. Dr. James holds over five doctorates and is an award-winning Ajahn, Master Thai Medicine Teacher, and Professor of Thai Traditional Medicine and Yoga Therapy.

Traditional Thai Yoga, Massage, and healing arts are classified as “Religious Therapeutics,” a form of Chirothesia Healing and indigenous conventional medicine.

Proper Clothing?

Dress ready to move! Many students opt to wear clothes suitable for either a Yoga class or similar Loose-fitting, comfortable clothing seems best.

What else do I need to bring?

Aside from yourself, of course, bring a notebook and pen. We provide you with all the necessary workbooks, textbooks, and materials in class.

SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Certification programs are unique and offer more professional education and growth opportunities than any other similar program. The first thing to keep in mind is that we were first! Our program has taught and certified Thai Yoga and Traditional Thai Massage professionals full-time since 1984. Most Thai Yoga, Thai Yoga Massage, and or Thai Massage programs currently in the U.S. were started and or operated by graduates of our original programs! As stated above, we offer more than the short TOURIST style (backrubs at the beach) type of training and certification pathway. We offer five levels of certification and five different College degrees, from Associate to Doctorate and Ph.D., based on Thai Yoga Massage as a core modality. No one else offers this.

Dr. Anthony B. James was the first western Thai Yoga Massage teacher to incorporate the concept of FLOW as a practice methodology into his certification programs in Thailand and the U.S. in the 80s.
